During the American Civil war, Union forces captured every Confederate state capital city east of the Mississippi River except Tallahassee. It is a trade and distribution point for the surrounding lumbering, agriculture, and livestock region. Tallahassee has a humid subtropical climate with long summers and short, mild winters, as well as drier springs and autumns.
