In the summer of 1955, James Dean was at the height of his fame. “East of Eden” had already made him a star, “Rebel Without a Cause” was weeks away from release, and “Giant” had just wrapped filming. Off screen, the 24-year-old actor was spending time with 19-year-old Swiss actress Ursula Andress, who would go on to international stardom herself. That August, the two attended the Thalians Ball at Ciro’s Nightclub on Sunset Strip in Los Angeles — one of Hollywood’s most glamorous venues of the era.
The Thalians Ball was an annual charity event organized by Hollywood celebrities, and Ciro’s was the place to be seen. On any given night, the club attracted the biggest names in film and music. Dean and Andress fit right in — both young, striking, and already drawing attention wherever they went.
According to biographer Darwin Porter, Dean and Andress were a regular sight around Los Angeles during 1955. Andress was often spotted riding on the back of Dean’s motorcycle as he cut through the city streets. He also brought her along to watch him race and drive his sports cars — a passion that defined much of his personal life during this period.
Dean’s obsession with speed was well known. He competed in races and bought cars regularly, always drawn to the fastest and most powerful machines available. Andress was present on September 30, 1955 — the very day Dean purchased the Porsche 550 Spyder he named “Little Bastard.” That same afternoon, he drove it toward Salinas for a race and was killed in a head-on collision near Cholame, California. He was 24 years old.

Ciro’s itself closed in 1957, just two years after this night. But in August 1955, it was still the center of Hollywood nightlife — a wood-paneled, candle-lit room where stars mingled freely with the press and public. Dean was no stranger to the spotlight, but by most accounts he preferred the open road to the social circuit.
Andress would move on after Dean’s death, eventually marrying actor John Derek in 1957. Her own career took off in 1962 when she appeared as Honey Ryder in the first James Bond film, “Dr. No” — a role that made her internationally famous. But in the summer of 1955, she was simply a young actress dating one of the most talked-about men in Hollywood.
