The 20th century in Atlantic City started with a rapid infrastructure change. The boarding houses were replaced with large hotels. The construction of the Marlborough-Blenheim Hotel and Traymore Hotel was also started in the early 1900s. Edward L. Bader was elected as the mayor of the city in the 1920s. The city bought land for Convention Hall, now known as the Boardwalk Hall, worth $1.5 million at that time. Below is a collection of incredible pictures showing streets, famous landmarks, and everyday life in Atlantic City and the Jersey Shore from the early 20th century. Vote your favorites
I don’t see one overweight person? Wtf happened? People must of been much more pleasant to be around back then.
These photos are incredible, some of the best I’ve seen.
Imagine how cool Atlantic County could have been without corrupt Republicans running it into the ground lmao
Good news. Over the last 35 years, 7 of 8 mayors of AC have been Democrats. They’ve turned it all around and AC is in great shape now.
Atlantic County
Ah. I see now. Can you explain how Atlantic County was run into the ground by corrupt Republicans? Admittedly, I have only ever gone to Atlantic City so I’m not sure what has happened to the rest of the area.
It’s a shame so many of those beautiful buildings no longer exist
The old buildings got torn down because they were obsolete.
For example, many of the old ‘beautiful’ AC hotels did not have a bathroom in each room. You had to use a communal bathroom at the end of the hallway.
Once visitors expected to have their own private bathroom, these old places couldn’t compete so they got torn down. Even if the owners wanted to remodel them, it was so costly it didn’t make economic sense..
I know– still makes me sad when cool architecture is lost
