Beach Styles: What Women Wore on the Beaches in the 1940s

Fashion changes all the time. What we wear to the beach or pool today is very different from long ago. Let’s dive into the world of women’s bathing suits in the 1940s. It was a decade of big changes, both in the world and in style. The Second World War had a large effect on everything, even swimwear.

The One-Piece Wonder

The most common bathing suit style was the one-piece. Think of it like a dress made for swimming. These suits weren’t like the sporty one-pieces of today.  They had short skirts that covered the upper thighs. This skirt was a key part of the look. It offered more coverage than modern swimsuits. Materials were different, too.  Instead of stretchy spandex, 1940s suits were often made from cotton, rayon, or a fabric called Lastex. Lastex had some stretch.

The Rise of the Two-Piece

The 1940s also saw the two-piece swimsuit start to gain popularity.  Don’t think of a tiny bikini, though.  These two-pieces were modest by today’s standards. The bottoms were high-waisted, reaching up to the belly button or even higher. This created a smooth silhouette.  The tops looked a bit like bras. They offered support and were often designed with wide straps.

World War II was happening during much of the 1940s.  This had a big effect on fashion. Fabric was rationed, meaning there was less to go around.  Because of this, swimsuit designs became simpler.  Extra frills and decorations were rare. There was less fabric used in general.

Colors and Prints

Even with simpler designs, women still wanted to look good at the beach. Colors and patterns helped with that.  Polka dots were a big hit. Stripes were also a popular choice.  Floral patterns added a touch of femininity.  Because of the war, patriotic colors like red, white, and blue were also common.

Bathing suits of the 1940s reflect the time period. They show a balance between modesty and a desire for style. They are also a reminder of how much fashion can change. These are much different from the swimwear of today.
