In 1954, Dr. Don Poynter invented the weird toothpaste that contained a small amount of Scotch, Bourbon, Rye, and it also contained 3% alcohol. These products enjoyed a brief but heady run for their novelty and amusement value. The product gained enough media attention that Life magazine did a story on Poynter’s invention. Several other brands later copied the idea and Poynter ceased production soon after.
Retiring in the late 1990s, Poynter has held patents on 100 or so novelty items, admittedly a nebulous number because “I never really bothered looking it up,” He said in an interview.
