Uppsala is the county seat of Uppsala County and Sweden’s fourth-largest city after Stockholm, Gothenburg, and Malmö. Uppsala is also the seat of the Uppsala Municipality, located 71 kilometres north of Stockholm.
Historically, Uppsala has been the ecclesiastical center of Sweden, serving as home to the Archbishop of Sweden since 1164. In the late 19th century, Uppsala Cathedral was frequently the site of Sweden’s coronations, which made it Scandinavia’s largest cathedral. Uppsala Castle was built by King Gustav Vasa and later expanded several times over its history, making it the secondary capital of Sweden to its greatest extent. Today, it serves as the residence of the Uppsala County Governor. Uppsala University was founded in 1477 and is the oldest higher education institution in Scandinavia. Carl Linnaeus, the father of taxonomy, and Anders Celsius, inventor of the centigrade temperature scale, are among the many scholars associated with the city.
