Tenerife is the largest and most populous island of the Canary Islands, Spain. The island’s black-and-gold beaches, an active volcano, unique ecological diversity and charming cliffside towns contribute to its popularity as one of the top tourist destinations. It is one of the most important tourist destinations in Spain. Every year five million tourists visit Tenerife. The capital of the island is Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
The island is home to the University of La Laguna. It iss the oldest university in the Canaries, founded in 1792 in San Cristóbal de La Laguna. The city of La Laguna itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is the second most populous in the archipelago and the third most populous on the island. It was the capital of the Canary Islands until Santa Cruz replaced it in 1833. Tenerife has two airports, Tenerife North Airport and Tenerife South Airport.
