Tacoma in the 1920s: Stunning Historical Photos Capturing Streets, Landmarks, and Everyday Life

The 1920s were not as roaring in Tacoma as elsewhere in the country, but it improved its water system and built hydroelectric power plants. During the Great Depression of 1929, the local economy suffered even more. Military spending and New Deal recovery programs contributed to the recovery. After Fort Lewis was established, Camp Lewis expanded. McChord Field became the Tacoma Municipal Airport. The Tacoma Narrows Bridge (which collapsed after four months due to a wind storm) was built with Public Works Administration funds.

Tacoma built Mueller-Harkins Field on a racetrack. In 1928, Pierce County built an airport north of Fort Lewis to serve Tacoma, but in 1938 the Army took it over for McChord Field.

It’s always fascinating to look at old pictures of familiar places in different periods. Below are some amazing historical photos that show Tacoma in the 1920s. And if you want to go back, check Tacoma in the 1900s and 1910s.
