Suddenly, Last Summer is a psychological drama and thriller film based on the 1958 play of the same name by Tennessee Williams. The film stars Elizabeth Taylor, Katharine Hepburn, and Montgomery Clift with Albert Dekker, Mercedes McCambridge, and Gary Raymond. Elizabeth Taylor portrayed the role of Catherine Holly. Katherine Hepburn and Elizabeth Taylor were both nominated for playing Violet Venable and Catherine Holly, respectively. It was Taylor’s third nomination in a row without a winner. This movie was Montgomery Clift’s third and final picture with Elizabeth Taylor.
The plot centers on a young woman who, at the insistence of her wealthy New Orleans aunt, is being evaluated by a psychiatric doctor to receive a lobotomy after witnessing the death of her cousin, Sebastian Venable, while traveling with him in Spain the previous summer. The film received mixed reviews. The film was judged as having suffered for being stretched to feature-length and having its content toned down from the play.
