People Lining up for Star Wars at the Coronet Theatre in San Francisco, 1977

On March 28, 1977, hundreds of people lined up at the Coronet Theatre in San Francisco. It was the only big-screen within 50 miles to show Star Wars for the film’s opening. The Coronet had more than 1,350 seats, including large rocking chairs, and was marketed as a luxury alternative to older movie theaters. The Coronet continued to be known as “the ‘Star Wars’ theater” until it was demolished in 2007.
