Singapore began upgrading to high-tech industries like wafer fabrication in the 1980s to compete with its neighbors with cheaper labor. Singapore Changi Airport opened in 1981, and Singapore Airlines developed into a major airline. Singapore became one of the world’s busiest ports during this time, and the service and tourism industries also grew rapidly. Singapore has become an important transportation hub and a popular tourist destination.
The Housing Development Board (HDB) continued to promote public housing with new towns, such as Ang Mo Kio, being designed and built. These new housing developments had larger and higher-standard apartments and better amenities. Today, 80–90% of the population lives in HDB apartments. The first Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) line began operating in 1987, connecting most housing estates with the city center.
Singapore’s government underwent several significant changes. Members of Parliament serving outside their constituencies were introduced in 1984 to allow up to three losing candidates from opposition parties to become MPs. Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) aim to ensure minority representation in parliament by creating multi-seat electoral divisions.
