Richard Beymer had already secured his place in Hollywood history by 1963. He played Tony in the 1961 film adaptation of “West Side Story,” one of the most celebrated movie musicals ever made. Sharon Tate, at this point, was still building her career. She had appeared in small television roles and was working her way toward larger film projects. Within a few years, she would earn notable roles in “Eye of the Devil” (1966) and “Valley of the Dolls” (1967), the latter earning her a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer.
Pacific Ocean Park was the perfect setting for a photo session like this. The park, commonly called POP, sat on a pier near Santa Monica and drew enormous crowds throughout the late 1950s and 1960s. It featured ocean-themed rides, attractions, and concessions, and it was a magnet for young Californians looking for fun close to the water. At its peak, POP was one of the most visited amusement parks on the West Coast.

Her natural beauty and screen presence were already drawing serious attention from directors and producers.
Beymer, born in 1938 in Avoca, Iowa, had been acting professionally since the mid-1950s. Alongside “West Side Story,” he appeared in “The Diary of Anne Frank” (1959) opposite Millie Perkins. By 1963, he was a known quantity in Hollywood with a filmography that most actors his age would envy.
Pacific Ocean Park itself would not survive the decade. Declining attendance, rising maintenance costs, and competition from Disneyland led to its closure in 1967. The pier fell into disrepair and was eventually demolished. Today, the site exists only in photographs and the memories of those who visited during its brief but vivid run.
Sharon Tate was murdered by members of the Manson Family on August 9, 1969, at her home in Los Angeles. She was 26 years old and eight and a half months pregnant at the time of her death. The killing was among the most shocking crimes in American history and brought an abrupt end to one of the more promising careers in Hollywood at the time.
