Rio de Janeiro is the second-most populous city in Brazil. It is one of the most visited cities in the Southern Hemisphere and is known for its beaches, peaks, ridges, street arts, and the biggest carnival in the world. The city became the colonial capital in 1763 and was the capital of independent Brazil from 1822 until 1960.
The city thrived after World War II, the population increased rapidly, skyscrapers, landmarks, tourist spots, and bridges and freeways were built. The economy was shifted from agriculture to an industrial-based economy.
