The Queenslander was a weekly summary and literary edition of the Brisbane Courier, one of the leading newspapers in the colony — and later, into the state — of Queensland since the 1850s. It was founded in 1866 by the Brisbane Newspaper Company and was discontinued in 1939. For a newspaper to reach the bush and the outlying districts in such a large country as Australia, it must also publish a weekly edition. Nevertheless, The Queenslander came to be used as a literary journal under the managing editorship of Gresley Lukin – managing editor from November 1873 until December 1880.
Thomas Blacket Stephens published The Queenslander for the first time on 3 February 1866 in Brisbane. The last edition was printed on 22 February 1939. Below you will find a collection of illustrated photos from the State Library of Queensland showing The Queenslander front covers in the late 1920s.
