On November 20, 1947, Princess Elizabeth, the future Queen of England, married Prince Philip at Westminster Abbey in London. This wasn’t just any royal wedding. It happened only two years after the end of World War II. Britain was still recovering. People faced rationing, and the country was working to rebuild itself.
Princess Elizabeth was the elder daughter of King George VI. She was expected to become queen one day. Prince Philip was born into Greek and Danish royal families. He had served in the Royal Navy during the war. Before the wedding, he gave up his foreign titles. He became a British citizen and took the name Philip Mountbatten.
The Preparations
Planning a big, royal wedding during a time of rationing was a challenge. Elizabeth used ration coupons to buy the material for her dress. The government gave her 200 extra coupons as a gift. Norman Hartnell, a famous British designer, created the dress. It was made of ivory silk and decorated with thousands of pearls and crystals.

The wedding cake stood nine feet tall. It had four layers, showing detailed scenes. Because ingredients were scarce, some were sent from overseas as wedding gifts. A piece of the cake was even sent back to Australia as a thank you.
The Ceremony
The wedding ceremony was a grand affair. Kings, queens, and other important people from around the world attended. The service was broadcast on the radio. Millions of people listened in, both in Britain and abroad.
Eight bridesmaids accompanied Princess Elizabeth. They included her younger sister, Princess Margaret. Prince Philip’s best man was his cousin, David Mountbatten.
The dress had a fitted bodice and a full skirt. The design included symbolic flower patterns. These represented the different countries of the United Kingdom. The long train, inspired by a painting by Botticelli, extended for over four meters.
The public celebrated the wedding. Crowds gathered in London to see the couple. People lined up the streets to catch a glimpse of the royal carriage. It was seen as a moment of joy and celebration. Many felt it was uplifting during difficult times.
Newspapers and magazines all over the world covered this wedding. Photos were published in countless numbers.
Elizabeth’s wedding ring followed a royal tradition. It’s made from Welsh gold. This gold comes from a specific mine in Wales. Philip designed Elizabeth’s engagement ring himself, with diamonds taken from a tiara that belonged to his mother.
