Portobello Road is a street in the Notting Hill district of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea in west London. Portobello Road Market is one of London’s most famous street markets on Saturdays, known for its second-hand clothing, pastries, and antiques. The Portobello Film Festival has been held every August since 1996. In 2015, Portobello Radio was launched as a community radio station in the area.
Before 1850s, Portobello Road was little more than a country lane connecting Portobello Farm in the north with Kensal Green in the south. It was mostly open land with hayfields and orchards. Following the completion of the Hammersmith and City Railway line in 1864 and the opening of Ladbroke Grove station, the northern end of Portobello Road also became developed, and the last of the open fields were covered with brick and concrete. Ultimately, the road was built piecemeal in the second half of the 19th century, nestled between the significant new developments of Paddington and Notting Hill.
