Dachshunds, also known as wiener dogs, badger dogs, and sausage dogs, are small, hound-type dogs. They can be smooth-haired, wire-haired, or long-haired. The name dachshund comes from German and means “badger dog.” Standard Dachshunds were bred to scent, chase, and flush out badgers, whereas miniature dachshunds were bred to hunt small animals such as rabbits and other small creatures.
