Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. Although the city proper is relatively small, suburbs and residential areas stretch far along the coast and into the interior. Nassau was established in the mid-17th century by Charles Towne. It took its present name in the 1690s from a family name of King William III of England but was not platted until 1729.
Nassau is home to the House of Assembly and various judicial departments and was historically a stronghold for pirates. The city is a tourist and international banking hub.
