In the 1960s Morocco was ruled by King Hassan II, after the death of his father. He was a conservative ruler and during his reign was marked by political unrest and heavy-handed government response to criticism and opposition. Many opposition leaders and laborers were arrested who spoke against the government’s policies. Hassan II allied Morocco with the West generally, and with the United States in particular.
