Greater Manchester Police is responsible for law enforcement in the metropolitan county of Greater Manchester. As of March 2020, it has,300 police officers, 350 Volunteer Special Constables, 606 Police Community Support Officers, and 2,961 members of police staff.
It was formed by amalgamating Manchester and Salford Police and parts of what were Lancashire Constabulary, Cheshire Constabulary, and West Yorkshire Constabulary on 1 April 1974. The first Chief Constable of GMP was William James Richards.
