Dan Gilroy first met Madonna in 1979, when she was an aspiring dancer. He moved into the synagogue where his brother Ed Gilroy lived in Corona, Queens. Dan became romantically involved with Madonna. Occasionally the brothers worked under the names Bil and Gil as musicians or comic artists from the studio. Madonna was at the synagogue practicing drums while Gilroy and his brother served tables during the day and performed their comedy routines at night. Additionally, she began writing songs, Gilroy taught her how to play guitar, and the two started a band called Breakfast Club.
Despite his reluctance, Madonna convinced Gilroy to let her sing her songs. The band performed local gigs under Madonna’s promotion. Madonna left Breakfast Club to form Emmy and the Emmys in 1980.
In 1979, Dan Gilroy, whom she was dating and visiting in New York, took these photos on the bus.
