Macaroni: Photos of the Kennedys’ pony in White House, 1960s

While at the White House, the Kennedys had several dogs, a cat, a canary, two parakeets, hamsters, a rabbit named Zsa Zsa, and a pony named Macaroni. Lyndon B. Johnson gave Caroline Kennedy Macaroni, a 10-year-old part-Shetland gelding. Occasionally, the pony was brought to the White House from its stables at Glen Ora, the Kennedy estate in Virginia horse country, and can be seen in iconic photographs of the Kennedys. Caroline and her friends would often ride Macaroni.

As Caroline Kennedy’s mother, Jackie Kennedy, gave a tour of the grounds to the Empress of Iran in 1962, the pony nuzzled Queen Farah in an apparent attempt to eat the daffodils she was holding. Jackie Kennedy reportedly joked, “He’s going to eat you.”. The brown and white pony had a stylish and impressive wardrobe. In March 1963, King Hassan II of Morocco presented Caroline with a Moroccan saddle as a gift. Caroline and Macaroni appeared together on the cover of LIFE Magazine on Sept. 7, 1962.
