Love in the Afternoon is 1957, starring Gary Cooper, Audrey Hepburn, and Maurice Chevalier. Audrey’s gorgeous eyes and acting, Gary Cooper’s tall, lanky frame, and his carefree bachelor style slowly begin to attract Audrey. It restores one’s belief that the improbable, no matter how unlikely, has the ring of truth and beauty, to paraphrase Conan Doyle. There is no doubt that the author and director knew a lot about love. Billy Wilder produced and directed the movie.
The film takes place mainly in the Ritz Hotel in Paris. Gary Cooper plays Frank Flannagan, a handsome American, wealthy, mature, and confirmed bachelor. There is nothing he enjoys more than women, champagne, and everything luxurious. He never gets serious about a relationship. His philosophy is “Don’t get attached. Always act as if you are between planes.”. His attitude changes after a chance meeting with beautiful, young French Ariane (Audrey Hepburn). During his last afternoon in Paris, she saves his life, and they spend the afternoon together. He leaves for America and forgets her. She is deeply in love with him and does not forget him. The two meet again a year later, and he falls for her this time, but she plays mysterious and elusive and drives him nuts.
Audrey Hepburn is gorgeous, classy, and talented. No wonder Gary Cooper is so fascinated by her beauty and charm. Despite Hepburn being on a lengthy location shoot for War and Peace, Wilder would consider no one else for the lead role. The ability of Gary Cooper to maintain a delicate balance between drama and humor is unmatched.
