London's Underground Life in the 1970s Through the Lens of Mike Goldwater

Photographer Mike Goldwater captured the life of London’s Underground community when smoking and kissing was allowed. Goldwater was still a young photographer honing his craft at the time. He roamed between points of travel beneath the city, capturing moments of intimacy and humor as people traveled across this iconic network of tunnels that live deep below the city.

Being in very close proximity to one another during rush hours, people have to shrink their personal space, while at other times of the day, parts of the system could be almost deserted. How people responded to both situations had picture potential.

The following intimate photos provide a glimpse into the London Underground in the past. Hoxton Mini Press also published several of Goldwater’s photos from the 1970s in a book ‘London Underground 1970 – 1980’.
