What Kitchens looked like in the 1950s Through These Cool Vintage Photos

At the end of World War II, the United States began enjoying an unending wave of unprecedented prosperity. Many soldiers returned to their homes, eager for the comforts they had been missing, and everyone settled into a kind of national nesting. In the newly developed suburbs, record numbers of homes were being constructed, and the kitchen was the heart of each of those homes.

Kitchen cabinets made from steel were very common in the 1950s, as manufacturers looked for ways to turn steel factories that produced weapons for the war into home appliances. The 1950s also saw the introduction of the dishwasher into the kitchen. Designers and homeowners embraced color in the kitchen throughout the ’50s, although these colors were softer than those seen in the ’30s and ’40s. In contrast to the bold colors of the 1930s and 1940s, the 1950s ushered in soft shades of blue, pink, and yellow – cabinets with matching appliances.

These fascinating vintage photos will take you back to some of the best 1950s Kitchens.
