Joan Crawford was only 27 during the filming of ‘Grand Hotel (1932)’. Crawford’s career had blossomed into stardom by 1932, but the most exciting roles remained to come. Initially, Joan turned down this role because she was afraid that most of her part would be cut. However, she accepted the role. She was assured that her role would be filmed tastefully, and she would be portrayed sympathetically by director Edmund Goulding and producer Irving Thalberg. However, Crawford’s concerns were well-founded since many censor boards in conservative states cut her scenes for indecency.
