A Winter Miracle: Jerusalem's Snowfall in 1921

Jerusalem is located in an area with a Mediterranean climate characterized by mild, wet winters and hot, dry summers. The city’s location at a high altitude and its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea makes it susceptible to occasional snowfall during the winter months. While snowfall in Jerusalem is relatively rare, it can occur due to the presence of cold air masses coming from the east and the combination of this cold air with the relatively warmer air of the Mediterranean Sea.

However, Jerusalem’s snowfall events are usually short-lived, and the snow does not accumulate for long periods of time. This is because the city’s high elevation, combined with the relatively mild temperatures and high humidity, causes the snow to melt quickly. Additionally, the city’s location in a desert region means low precipitation throughout the year, making snowfall events even less likely.

However, the people of Jerusalem witnessed a mild snowstorm on February 25th, 1921. The British occupied the city after the fall of the Ottoman Empire. The new city of Jerusalem grew outside the old city walls, and ancient city of Jerusalem gradually emerged as little more than an impoverished older neighborhood. Here are some stunning photos of people enjoying the snow.
