Janis Joplin at her House in Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco, November 1967

Baron Wolman took these photographs in November 1967 at Janis Joplin’s home in Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco. She seemed at ease in the pictures. Relaxing on her bed with her dog and cat was her favorite pastime. Other photos of Janis Joplin in front of one of her bedroom walls, which was decorated with copies of the famous poster featuring a semi-nude Janis that Bob Seidemann had taken.

Wolman was a rolling stone’s first staff photographer. He had virtually unlimited access to the stars of the day, photographing Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, and Jim Morrison. Although his work for Rolling Stone has defined his photographic career, Baron has also been involved in several nonmusical projects. In 1970, Wolman started his fashion magazine, Rags, housed in Rolling Stone’s first San Francisco offices. Rags magazine was a counterculture fashion magazine ahead of its time (the Rolling Stone of fashion), focusing more on street fashion than the fashion found in store windows. Its 13 issues (June 1970 through June 1971) were artistic and irreverent but not financially successful.
