Somewhere in Time is a 1980 American romantic fantasy drama film starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. The film is based on Richard Matheson’s 1975 novel Bid ‘Time Return’, for which the screenplay was also written. The film tells the story of a young writer who sacrifices his present life to find true love in the past. An older woman offers Richard Collier (Christopher Reeve) her antique gold watch and begs him to return with her in Time. Years later, Richard Collier finds a picture of a beautiful young woman (Jane Seymour) and is overcome. Seeing a picture of this woman in her later years, he can confirm that she is the same woman who gave him the gold watch. Collier then becomes obsessed with returning to 1912 and finding the beautiful young woman awaiting him there.
The story has a beautiful old-fashioned feel and is pleasant leisurely. The story is straightforward, the acting is lovely, and the music is breathtaking. The theme song, “Somewhere in Time,” is composed of beautiful lyrics that add to the story’s sad and frustrating romance.
