‘The Country Girl’ is a 1954 American drama film directed and written by George Seaton and starring Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and William Holden. This film is based on Clifford Odets’ 1950 play with the same title. It is about a former actor/singer struggling with the last time he has been given to try to resurrect his career after battling alcoholism. Oscar Seaton won the Best Writing, Adapted Screenplay Award. The film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in 1955.
The role, which had earned Uta Hagen her first Tony Award in the play’s original Broadway production, won Grace Kelly the Academy Award for Best Actress. Kelly played the alcoholic actor’s long-suffering wife in this non-glamorous role.
Grace Kelly attended the Academy Awards at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood, California, on March 30, 1955, as an Oscar winner for her role in The Country Girl.
