In 1941, a group of women from the Young Women’s Republican Club in Milford, Connecticut, organized an event typically reserved for men: a “smoker.” Smokers were casual gatherings where men would smoke, play cards, and engage in lively conversation, often in smoke-filled rooms. These women sought to experience and enjoy these activities for themselves.
On the evening of May 20, these GOP women gathered for a night of tobacco, poker, and other activities commonly associated with men. LIFE photographer Nina Leen was there to capture the event, documenting the unique and memorable night.
The women of the Young Women’s Republican Club arrived dressed in a mix of formal and casual attire. Some wore elegant dresses, while others opted for more relaxed outfits. They gathered in a spacious room filled with comfortable chairs and tables set up for poker.
