Gia Marie Carangi was a famous fashion model who took the modeling world by storm with her stunning looks and edgy attitude. She was one of the most favorite models of Fashion photographers. Carangi was featured on famous international magazines like Cosmopolitan and Vogue multiple times, between 1979 and 1982, and represented top clothing brands. In a very short period, she achieved a lot of fame and success.
At the age of 18, Carangi was making more than $100,000 a year. It was more than any other model at that time, leading many fashion historians to dub her the world’s first supermodel. She would walk off shoots if she was not feeling good, or would cancel weeks of work if she didn’t like her haircut.
During her golden period, Gia Carangi started living a luxurious and wild life. She was very often partying, regularly using cocaine and often canceling her contracts. She would cry and shout for not having drugs during her shoots, in one of ‘American Vogue’s’ issues, Carangi was spotted with needle marks. She tried rehabilitation and several other recovery programs, but nothing worked in her favor.
Drug addiction not only ruined her career but also destroyed her life. She had sexual relationships with her friends and coworkers. Gia Caranagi was diagnosed with AIDS-related complications and was admitted to hospital. One month later, she died of a complication caused by this cruel disease.
