George Hoyningen-Huene was one of the finest fashion photographs of the 1920s and 1930s. He was born in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he enjoyed a privileged childhood, exposed to different forms of art at an early age. Huene moved to England with his family in 1914 where he began working as a fashion draftsman for his sister’s design while taking an interest in the film.
Huene started his professional career in 1925 by signing a contract with Vogue. In 1935 he moved to New York and began working almost exclusively for Harper’s Bazaar. During his career, he photographed some of the most famous personalities such as celebrities, fashion models, sports players, and many more. Huene was notably one of the first photographers to take pictures of models from a higher vantage point, giving them the quality of Greek sculpture.
Here below are some fantastic photos of celebrities from the 1920s captured by George Hoyningen-Hue.
