Fulton Fish Market is located in Hunts Point, a section of the Bronx borough, New York City. The Fulton Fish Market was founded in 1807. Previously, the Market space housed produce stalls, butchers, and fishmongers. The Fulton Fish Market moved to South Street between Fulton and Beekman Street in 1822 when it became independent from the general Market. Before 1850, the Fish Market was mainly a direct supply system. Housekeepers and cooks would purchase the fish directly from fishermen in port – usually around midnight. In 1850, wholesale merchants became intermediaries between fishermen and buyers, a process we are more familiar with today.
In November 2005, the Fish Market moved from its historic location near the Brooklyn Bridge along the East River waterfront at and above Fulton Street in Lower Manhattan to a new facility in Hunts Point in the Bronx. Fulton Fish Market was the most important wholesale fish market on the East Coast for much of its 183-year history. The port opened in 1822, and fishing boats from across the Atlantic sailed there. Fish at the Market was mainly trucked in rather than offloaded from the docks by the 1950s. Restaurateurs and retailers bought fresh fish of every kind at the Market from wholesalers.

Making Bid for "Stardom". Usually cast in a supporting role, Phil Fish has entered the race for star billing, what with the average retail price of all cuts of choice grade beef reaching a record $1.30 per pound last month. Phil's star category bid may be affected by Pres. Nixon's announcement, clamping a ceiling price on beef, pork, and lamb. Phil's shown here during early-morning makeup and weighin at the Fulton Fish Market in lower Manhattan.
