Selfies are a global phenomenon, and it has taken social media by storm. Even the word “selfie” has become a legitimate word in the Oxford English dictionary. Most selfie addicted people start and finish their day with selfies, and they take selfies wherever they go, whatever they do.
But have you ever wondered who the first person to take a “selfie” was? Robert Cornelius was the first person who made the first selfie ever in 1839. Here are some iconic selfies from the past that were taken before smartphones.
They were self portraits before they were selfies, and painters were doing them even before photographers were. It’s just a new term for an old practice that dates back 500 years.
It’s my own definition, but I always considered a self-portrait being done by remote/timer and a selfie done while holding the camera directly.
If that’s the distinction, then I was taking selfies with my dslr for a couple decades before “selfie” was a word. In fact, I’ve taken far more of these with a dslr than I have with a phone.
Yea, wasn’t trying to say it was new, just that I consider there to be a distinction between selfie and self-portrait. I think I’m the only person that thinks that though
