Denmark During World War II: Historical Photos Capturing Everyday Life of Danish People
In 1939, Hitler offered nonaggression pacts to the Scandinavian nations, and Denmark readily accepted and signed the treaty. At the outbreak of World War II, Copenhagen declared its neutrality. German forces violated the pact and invaded Denmark on the morning of 9 April 1940. The attack was accompanied by an ultimatum that no resistance was to be offered.
In 1943, the German demands of control became intolerable, and the Danish Government resigned, and Germany assumed complete control of Denmark. An armed resistance movement grew against the occupying forces, but the Danish people get rid of German troops at the end of War when German troops in Denmark surrendered to the English on 5 May 1945. The war and the occupation cost around 7,000 Danes their lives.
