In 1950s Denmark, the Cold War between capitalism and communism sparked fears of nuclear war. However, after WWII, there was optimism that the future would be better than the past. In the early 1950s, the Danish economy had a significant trade deficit. Thanks to lower import prices for raw materials, the situation improved later in the decade. Denmark was one of the European Free Trade Association’s founding members.
The youth of the 1950s developed their own identities due to their dissatisfaction with their parents’ beliefs, and conventional gender roles were gradually questioned during the decade.
