Cyndi Lauper: A Timeless Style Inspiration from the 1980s to Today

When you think of a music icon also famous for her fashion styles, who is the first person that comes to mind? Madonna, Stevie Nicks, or Cher? While all three of those women have distinct fashion styles that we absolutely admire, Cyndi Lauper rocked with her craziest outfits, colorful styles, and daring fashion choices. This pop legend established a cult-like following in the ’80s with her irreverent fashion sense that inspired future rock, punk, and grunge styles. She mixed, matched, and clashed colors, patterns, textures, and styles to create a distinctive look.

Cyndi Lauper started writing lyrics and playing guitar at the age of 12. She began her music career as a vocalist for various cover bands in the 1970s. In 1977, Lauper damaged her vocal cords and was told by doctors that she would never sing again. However, with the help of vocal coach Katie Agresta, Lauper worked hard and regained her voice within a year. In 1978, she formed a band named Blue Angel with John Turi, and they performed their songs at concerts and shows. The band won a recording contract and released a self-titled album on the label in 1980. However, the band broke up because the album did not meet expectations. Lauper went bankrupt and temporarily lost her voice due to an inverted cyst in her vocal cord. She also worked in local retail stores and as a waitress at IHOP.

In 1983, Lauper released her first solo album, “She’s So Unusual.” The album was a huge hit, and Lauper became popular among teenagers due to her hybrid punk image. It included the iconic song “Girls Just Want to Have Fun,” which became an MTV favorite and topped the charts. In 1984, the album was nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards, and Lauper won the award for Best New Artist.
