The corporation was founded in 1916 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines, produced in 1917 through 1918, and then again between 1933 and 1945.

Automobiles are marketed under the BMW, Mini and Rolls-Royce brands. Motorcycles are marketed under the BMW Motorrad brand. BMW has its headquarters in Munich and produces motor vehicles in Germany, Brazil, China, India, Mexico, the Netherlands, South Africa, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
