Bilbao is the largest city in the province of Biscay, Spain. Bilbao experienced rapid industrialization in the 1870s due to iron ore exports and the development of iron, steel, and shipbuilding industries. Industry growth attracted workers from other parts of Spain, and their presence soon prompted a reaction to Basque nationalism. Following the decline of the steel and shipbuilding industries in the 1960s, tourism and services have grown in importance
In the 1960s, the city also underwent several urban projects, including creating new neighborhoods such as Otxarkoaga and the motorway to the French border. The University of Bilbao was founded in June 1968. It later became part of the University of the Basque Country.
