Look at those beautiful streets, completely unmolested by cars. It is my hope that car use will be completely phased out in our future society. The days of public transit and carless cities are numbered
At this section of downtown crossing, cars are not allowed except for government vehicles…
You’re romanticizing the past. In the photo, you can’t see the smell of fresh horseshit and everyone’s poop.
The latter is fine, the former isn’t so bad
Then go smell a homeless man up close. I don’t mind living in the 21st century.
It’s time to enjoy it while it lasts, nuclear and batteries and solar won’t be able to cover our current energy requirements, and oil is only going to get more expensive. The future will look a lot more like 1800 than “2200”
Wind has entered the chat
I’d like to know more about how they develop the steel for modern windmills. The metals aren’t refined or mined with fossil fuels, are they?
An independent review of Vestas’ results was conducted by US researchers at a large wind farm in the Pacific Northwest. In a study published in the International Journal of Sustainable Manufacturing, the authors conclude that a wind turbine with a 20-year working life will offer a net benefit within five to eight months of being installed if it is used to produce the energy required for its production and installation.
However, that does not solve the problem I have posed. We won’t be able to produce any wind turbines if fossil fuels are necessary parts of the production process. This is not an EROEI problem, but rather one related to the limits of fossil fuels.
The remaining fossil fuels will be used for material production if we convert as much electricity and vehicle power to renewable sources as possible.
However, it is only a temporary patch, not a solution, at least until a genius finds a chemical substitute for oil
Would someone be able to pinpoint on a map where this is located? On the right, is that the Jewelers Building?
On the left side of the street you can make out B.F. Keith’s New Theatre. Today, between the Boston Opera House and the Paramount Theatre, Salvatore’s restaurant serves as the entrance to this theatre.
A 564 can be seen on Puritan Dental at the bottom right, so I’m guessing around this Caffè Nero.
Watching old movies makes me think the same thing
One of the strangest things about pictures like this is realizing that everyone in them is dead and one day I too will be gone.
The time we have is precious. Make it count.
starts counting……
Photographs of vampires fade over time.
Awnings on upper floors should be brought back
Having taller buildings around to shade the morning and afternoon sun reduces the need for them. There is even a building on the left without them, and a taller building across the street. They’re even taller now!
The City Point trolley goes one way and the East Boston trolley goes the other. It’s so strange.
Why is that Strange?
