It’s amazing how clear this photo is. The scene looks like you could walk right into it.
I came to say the same thing. It’s incredible. Does it have any enhancements?
Maybe a little sharpening, but chances are it’s 4×5 film (large format), which is a larger medium than most cameras we use today. LF lenses and the sheer size of the film produce a really clear/sharp image, although there are cameras that perform better than 4×5.
Incredible technology for 100 years ago.
TBH, we almost reversed the trend for a few decades. From 4×5 to 110 film, then early cell phones, and now yoga pixel cameras and digital medium format. I found it very interesting (at least for me)

Everything looks so clean!
The first thing I noticed was. Walls aren’t covered in car exhaust. Litter-free. Dresses were nice. There is no Facebook.
Not a cell phone in sight. Just people living in the moment
No traffic on State Street?!
Although I was going to say it was probably due to the significantly smaller population, it seems to be only about 100,000 smaller. According to US Census records, there were around the same amount of people in 1900 as there were in 1980.
It must’ve been surreal to see “The East Boston Tunnel”. The tunnel was the first in North America to travel under a body of water when it opened two years prior. It must have seemed like something from HG Wells or Jules Verne. I like the ribbon with the words on it and the older seal of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Above the coat of arms displayed above the window is the ribbon that reads “ENSE PETIT PLACIDUAM SUB LIBERATE QUIETEM,” which is the official motto of the Commonwealth.
Today I Learned the my state’s motto!
