There wasn’t any water under that train, was there? Was that from Revere to Eastie?
According to Wikipedia, the train tunnel under the harbor was opened in 1904
Yes, that’s the same tunnel going to Government Center today. At this time, Eastie was very active in Boston’s shipbuilding industry. Reverse beach and Maine were also popular destinations for narrow gauge trains.
I believe that’s why the train cars on the Blue line are so different from all the others. To accommodate the old tunnel and tracks, they are built to specifications.
Additionally, they are the only type that can be powered by overhead wire or 3rd rail. When you’re one of the oldest, nothing is standard.
The details are fascinating. An underwater tunnel was dug in 1904. I wonder how many lives were lost.
A total of four men died while building it.
Streetcars used to run under the harbor in what is now the Blue line tunnels. Rather than using larger cars like on the Red and Orange and having to reconstruct the tunnels, the tunnels were converted to rapid transit in 1924. In the past, one could ride a streetcar from East Boston/Revere to Harvard Square without transferring.
Ferries used to run from Maverick to the trolley.
The T hasn’t changed at all, huh?
