He was a private in Company I of the 7th New York Heavy Artillery during the American Civil War. He was injured during the 1864 Battle of Cold Harbor, where he underwent a major surgical procedure known as excision of the head and 4 inches of the shaft of the femur. This procedure involved the removal of a portion of the femur bone in the thigh, typically due to severe injury or disease.
