Before the estate house burned down, the neighborhood was laid out. After the estate house burned down (it had been converted to a hotel by then), Glazenwood, a smaller neighborhood within a neighborhood, was built. In case you are interested, a local, from an old San Mateo family, wrote a book about the city with many great photos. The book belongs to a series that explores a variety of California communities.
I just want to mention that although the local historical associations are filled with lovely people, they all seem to believe that Bay Area history began around 1850.
Yeah, the Gold Rush is when California as we know it really took off.
