On 4 July 1987, the German Democratic Republic paraded through the city’s streets to celebrate 750 years since Berlin was founded. There were Sony Walkmans, Boney Ms, and mullets in West Germany. Among the highlights of the county’s eastern half were a platoon of women in high heels and bikinis, desktop computers on wheels and a meeting of Erich Honecker, the Secretary-General of the Central Committee of the SED and Chairman of the Council of State of the GDR.
