During the 1960s, Bellevue was expanded when the Crossroads community and Lake Hills were annexed. The population of Bellevue increased more than fourfold over the next decade, making it the fourth largest city in Washington. A second floating bridge connected nearby Evergreen Point with Seattle in 1963. Later, Interstate 405 sliced through Bellevue, allowing north-south drivers to bypass Seattle while enhancing eastside accessibility.
Bellevue was outgrowing its strictly suburban orientation to become a distinctive metropolitan center, dominating the east side and influencing other cities, such as Seattle. Several new subdivisions, often meticulously planned, grew east of downtown, like shopping centers like Crossroads. Business parks and office complexes mushroomed.
In the past, we’ve looked at images of Bellevue in the 1940s and 1950s. And here, we have compiled a list of some interesting vintage photos of Bellevue from the 1960s.
