Robert Redford and Jane Fonda during the filming of 'Barefoot in the Park (1967)'

Barefoot in the park is a 1967 romantic comedy film starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. The film is an adaptation of Neil Simon’s play ‘Barefoot in the Park.’ It is an amusing film that is cleverly written and wonderfully acted, as is the repartee between the two major characters.

The film story revolves around a newlywed couple, Robert Redford and Jane Fonda, who moved into a New York apartment building peopled by eccentrics. Their tiny apartment has a hole in the skylight, no heat, and you have to walk up five flights of stairs to get there. As a rather stodgy conservative, Redford has a dim view of the affair; as an excessively happy-go-lucky individual, Fonda finds it a lot fun. As a result, they’ll soon be hammering each other to death.

The film was released on May 25, 1967, and it was a critical and commercial success, with critics praising its light-hearted tone and cast performances. It grossed $30 million worldwide on a budget of $2 million. Mildred Natwick and Fonda were both nominated for Academy Awards for their performances in the film.
