Bananarama is a group of female pop stars who started their career in London in 1981. Three friends, Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward, formed the group. Between 1982 and 2009, they had 28 singles that reached the Top 50 of the Singles Chart. They have released ten albums and sold 30 million records. And the group also listed in the Guinness World Records for achieving the world’s highest number of chart entries by any female group. Fahey left the group in 1988 and formed Shakespears Sister. Jacquie O’Sullivan also joined the group in 1988 for three years and departed in 1991. After that, Dallin and Woodward continued Bananarama as a duo.
When Dallin and Woodward were about to be homeless, Paul cook offered them a place to live above the Sex Pistol rehearsal room in Denmark Street. The room was full of musical instruments. They learned to play bass and did backing vocals for fun for Paul Cook and Steve Jones. In 1981, Bananarama recorded their first demo, “Aie a Mwana.” British Music and fashion magazine, The Face, featured an article about their first single. Soon they were invited by Terry Hall to collaborate with his new vocal group Fun Boy Three. This was the first mainstream introduction and success of Bananarama.
Here below are some photos that show different fashion styles of the Bananarama group from the 80s.
