How to Steal a Million is a 1966 heist comedy film starring Audrey Hepburn, Peter O’Toole, Eli Wallach, Hugh Griffith and Charles Boyer. Despite being set and filmed in France, the film’s characters speak only English. The movie has a few twists and turns, but most importantly, it has a happy ending, just like every old-timer had it one way or another. The film extensively uses the beauty and glamor characteristic of Paris, passing through a series of iconic locations such as the Hotel Ritz, the column of Place Vendôme, and even the Élysée Palace. Stunning cinematography, the sun and light, and the quality of the props and sets contributed to the film’s incredible visual beauty. Lastly, Hepburn’s wardrobe was designed specifically for her by Givenchy, the actress’s favorite stylist.
The plot begins with Charles Bonnet and his daughter, Nicole. While Bonnet and his family look rich and have an extensive art collection, in reality, he is a skilled forger, very proud of his work and perfection. So much so that he agreed to provide a faux sculpture to French museums to be displayed in pomp and circumstance as a relic of national importance. Things get complicated as soon as they realize that an expert must examine the piece for insurance purposes. Then, Nicole decides to steal the statue with the assistance of a professional thief.
